Were you waiting for the 997 generation of the Porsche 911 to drop below $30k? The time has now come. There are currently seven 997 Porsche 911 Carrera coupes listed on Autotrader.com for $29,XXX and one has just 80k miles.

Financing a vehicle of that age with a reasonable interest rate may be difficult, but it can be done. A credit union would be your best bet unless you've got 30 large laying around.

Now, do I sell the E46 M3 for one?

Nah, I'll keep it for now thanks =) The car I really want is the 997.2 C2S and they're still out of my price range!

I figured you would be on about one of these:

The thing with those is that you either have to go early, like 2005 production, or late, like 2009+ 997.2. The earlier ones have an IMS configuration that allows quick and easy access to the bearing so you can upgrade it while doing the clutch and/or RMS. During later production 997.1 cars they changed the design to make bearing failure less common, but impossible to fix before it happened (without splitting the engine). The 997.2 had an entirely different design with no IMS and, hence, no IMS bearing worry at all. Also, if you find an early car with some miles on it chances are this has already been addressed - so much the better if you don't care about the mileage or you're going to track the thing.

Well yeah I am of course but I'm also being realistic. I'm currently under contract to buy a house that costs as much as a Rolls, so I'll be lucky if I can even track my current car more than once or twice next year, let alone drool on GT3s.

Those will never hit $30k.

Hell, the 997.2 GT3 will never drop below $100k.

I think the best deal for 997's is a base 997.2 Carrera. No IMS to worry about, nearly the same power as the 997.1 Carrera S, and the 997.2's upgraded interior...closely behind it is a 2005.5/2006 modesl, for the reasons you mentioned.

10 year old 911 with 80k miles? And no warranty? Sounds scary.

I agree about the bang for your buck with the 997.2 base C2. And don't forget, you could order the 997.2 with a limited slip diff, although looking for one of those is a needle in a haystack sort of proposition.

Saracen speaketh the truth... though I slightly prefer the exterior of the .1 to the .2. Of course the peace of mind having a 9A1 over M96/97 would be all the better.

There's one at Herb Chambers Porsche in Boston with 58k for $33k right now. Could probably get them down to $30k if you're interested. Black over black coupe.
